The south coast of England is home to some of the UK’s most breathtaking views, making it one of the most popular places to paddle in the country. Asgard is based in Bournemouth, one of the most popular holiday destinations for domestic travel on the south coast and we believe that the English channel is one of, if not the most beautiful areas to paddle in the country. Today, we will list three of our favourite locations from the South West all the way to the South East.
St Michael’s Mount
Located in Cornwall, Saint Michael’s Mount is similar in name and looks to France’s Mont St Michel and provides paddlers with stunning views. This landmark is located near Station Car Park in Long Rock, making it easily accessible for those wishing to experience its beauty. It is important to note, however, that due to its shallow water, this area can only be accessed to paddlers on a high tide as rocks appear on the surface in low tides.
Durdle Door
Located on the coast of Dorset, Durdle Door is one of Britain’s most breathtaking natural landmarks, making it one of Dorset’s biggest tourist attractions. Durdle Door’s beautiful arch can be paddled through on both kayaks and SUPs allowing paddlers to immerse themselves in their environment, creating a feel of adventure. Durdle Door is easily accessible as there is a holiday park and a car park, meaning people from anywhere can visit and even stay for extended periods of time with their family.
Beachy Head/Cuckmere
Our third location takes us to the South East, upon the beautiful coastline of East Sussex stands monstrous white chalk cliffs. Located between Eastbourne and Seaford, Beachy Head is the pride and joy of East Sussex locals. If sea kayaking is not for you, the Cuckmere, located next to Beachy Head, is a beautiful, curvy river that overlooks the South Downs National Park. Specifically, the Cuckmere is very popular for paddle sports such as kayaking and paddleboarding due to its calm waters.
Which is best for me?
A short answer: it depends what you are looking for. If you prefer calm waters, the Cuckmere river is the best option for you, however if you like a challenge, Durdle Door or Beachy Head would be better suited to your preferences. No matter your preferences, each of these locations provide scenic views and are welcoming to both experienced and beginner level paddlers.
